The evolution of cement production tells a fascinating story: as rotary kilns have become larger and larger, with some reaching capacities of 12,500 tons per day and more, the quest for efficiency has sometimes come at the expense of stability. The use of different alternative fuels and wear and tear due to mechanical stresses create challenging conditions for the refractory in the rotary kiln. This is the reality of modern cement production.
Faced with this dilemma, a cement manufacturer in Vietnam approached the SUNTHERM team for a specialized refractory solution, and the latest alkaline bricks developed by SUNTHERM were the most suitable choice of refractory, with high elasticity and resistance to thermal and chemical attack, able to withstand the unique stresses of a large rotary kiln, thus effectively extending the kiln's service life.
The kiln, which used to operate for a maximum of 9 months, was effectively extended to a full 12 months with the use of SUNTHERM's alkaline bricks, a result that proves the importance of a well thought out choice of materials that can withstand the increased mechanical stresses and harsh thermo-chemical attack environment that the kiln is subjected to by selecting the right refractory product.
