Tips On How To Maintain A Gas Fireplace

Sep 01, 2022

01. Clean the glass on the gas stove

Cleaning the glass on a gas fireplace is relatively easy and can make a big difference to the look of your fireplace.

Most home gas stoves have removable doors for easy cleaning. We recommend referring to the manufacturer's instructions on how to safely remove the glass panel from the door.

Once removed, place it on dust paper or old newspaper. You can use a supermarket window or glass cleaner to clean the glass. Alternatively, you can make your own by mixing white vinegar and lemon juice with water in a spray bottle.

Spray a small amount on the glass and wipe lightly (but firmly) with a microfiber cleaning cloth. Next, grab some kitchen towels and dry the glass to prevent streaks.

We recommend waiting at least half an hour for the glass to air dry before reinserting it into the fireplace door. This will ensure that the window cleaner has evaporated before it comes into contact with the flame.

02. Clean the inside of the gas stove

Internal gas fire cleaning is critical to extending the life of your equipment. Most heating engineers will clean as part of their annual gas fire service. However, we recommend that you clean the inside of your gas stove more frequently.

Before starting cleaning, make sure your device is completely shut down and cooled down.

Wipe well to remove dirt, cobwebs, and any other debris.

Before removing logs or coal, remember to take pictures of them. This will help you reposition them later. Putting them back in the right place can prevent some home gas fires from happening.

03. Clean and replace coal/logs

Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to check if coal or logs from the fireplace can be safely removed and cleaned. If it's safe to remove logs or coals, take them outside and use a small, soft-bristle brush to brush off any soot and debris.

Avoid wiping, wetting, or spraying anything on coal or logs. It discolors them, damages their finish and prevents them from working effectively.

If you notice any rust spots or cracks on the log or coal, do not continue to use it.

04. Check the detector and replace the battery

As part of your fire safety inspection, you will need to test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. This should be done regularly to improve the safety of those living on your property. We also recommend replacing the battery twice a year.

While you're at it, it's a good idea to check and replace the batteries in your gas fireplace remote if necessary. If you need to shut down your gas fireplace quickly, it's beneficial to have a remote that works.
