What to do when your gas logs fall over(Part 1)

Jun 07, 2022

Fake gas fireplace logs are made of ceramic or similar materials. They can absorb a lot of heat without damage. Without them, most of the heat of the combustion gases escapes through the vents. By retaining more heat, ceramics provide warmth and comfort to your home. They also look beautiful.

But sometimes logs fall over or have other problems and need to be replaced or put back in place.

Let's take a closer look at three reasons why you shouldn't furnish your own ceramic gas fireplace.

1). Fireplace Safety - Avoid Silent Killers

This is pretty serious stuff, and we could talk about it in common language or science, but the conclusion is the same: incorrect or inappropriate log placement can lead to higher levels of carbon monoxide in your fireplace.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as the "silent killer". You may have heard of this gas that it can kill people while sleeping. It has no odor, so there is no warning without a carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon monoxide deaths are more common in winter, when winter storms can cause power outages. Some people think they can heat up their house by bringing their barbecue home. Burning coal or gas produces excess carbon monoxide. If too much carbon monoxide fills the house, it will put everyone to sleep and they will never wake up. This is a completely avoidable tragedy.

What does this have to do with gas logs?

The logs are designed by various fireplace brand manufacturers. They give specific advice on how they should be arranged so that they do not interfere with the flow of gas. Proper gas flow prevents what is scientifically known as incomplete combustion. Complete combustion produces carbon dioxide. But not quite, what you get is carbon monoxide.

Therefore, if the airflow is disturbed too much, lethal amounts of carbon monoxide can be produced.

If you go there and place the logs yourself, just based on how it looks, you can't possibly place them the way the manufacturer says.

There are so many websites that tell you fake logs are just for "beauty" - for a visually pleasing fireplace because you don't use any wood.

This is not correct. They can also provide heat while increasing safety. Unnecessarily dangerous if placed incorrectly.
