The variety of gas fireplace types means you'll want to consider all of your options before making a buying decision. You will also need to consider whether you are going with an existing chimney or if you need to accommodate new ventilation.
Three types of gas fireplaces are described below: built-in gas fireplaces, fireplace inserts, and freestanding gas stoves. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, as well as its own aesthetic.
1) Built-in gas fireplaces
Built-in gas fireplaces provide a complete fabrication unit capable of fitting into a framed enclosure, fireplace unit or wall space. For ventilation, a built-in fireplace requires a dedicated chimney or ventilation system, within a few inches of combustible material, for safe operation. This ventilation can be run through exterior walls or existing chimneys with appropriate compatible components.
2) Gas fireplace inserts
Gas fireplace inserts differ from built-in fireplaces in that they must be installed in an existing fireplace, just like an old wood-burning masonry unit. These fireplaces also require the insertion of a chimney system within the existing chimney to ensure safe and efficient operation.
