How to measure gas log set

Feb 20, 2023

Vented logs must be installed in approved fireplace openings with working chimneys. In contrast, ventless gas logs can be run in an existing fireplace with the flue closed or in an approved firebox. Vented fireplaces are generally more aesthetically pleasing, while unvented fireplaces are better for heating.

In order for a gas log set to look great and perform properly, it has to fit the fireplace it's in. However, we often see incorrectly sized logs and the myriad of problems that follow. Determining the size of the gas log is more important than measuring the width of the firebox.

Here are some tips for getting the right size gas log set:

01. Always read the manufacturer's specifications

Owner's manuals for fireplaces and log sets always contain a lot of information. Some of the most important information listed are the minimum specifications for the combustion box size. These measurements are not recommendations. Failure to follow these guidelines can lead to poor equipment performance at best and safety hazards at worst.

02. Don’t buy too big a suit

This is something we see so often that we want to single it out. Make sure your log set is not too large. Many customers buy the largest set they can install without considering factors such as proper clearance. Just because a set fits doesn't mean it's the best choice.
